West Nile Virus: microscopic view on the left, mosquito vector on the right.

The first West Nile virus-positive mosquito sample of 2025 in California has been confirmed in North Shore, Coachella Valley, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by Culex mosquitoes, especially during warmer months.

While no human cases have been reported in California this year, local vector control officials have increased mosquito surveillance and treatment in affected areas.

West Nile virus is the leading mosquito-borne illness in the U.S. Most infected people show no symptoms, but about 1 in 5 may experience fever, body aches, or rash. In severe cases — about 1 in 150 — the virus can lead to neurological illness or death.

How to protect yourself:
✔️ Stay indoors at dawn and dusk
✔️ Use EPA-registered repellents like DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus
✔️ Wear long sleeves and pants outdoors
✔️ Repair window and door screens
✔️ Drain standing water in your yard weekly
